The Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture recognizes the need for independent studio time to complement more formal classroom learning. To fill this need, it makes available a limited amount of open studio time for its students for a small fee.
The Purpose of Open Studio Study
Open studio study is intended for private practice and refinement of the sculptor's skills without the benefit of instruction or a model. (In fact, on occassion open studio time will be allowed while a class is in session yet interaction between the two will not be allowed.)
Table Study Methods
The primary method used for table study is to practice making sculptural shapes from existing work of excellent quality.

Sculptors will be provided with a "study" of a particular body part or another object (like a skull) that will help provide instruction on the anatomy.
Also, study of another fine classical artist's work from several angles may be used to learn particular intricacies in articulation--as seen in Cellini's masterpiece below.

Table Classes for Youth
Table classes for youth often involve selecting one of many different shapes (not necessarily human) to create sculpture from. The subject may be a rabbit, a turtle, a skull or any number of things. The object is not the issue. The teaching of technique and understanding of form is what is important.
Study by Topic
Learning how to deal with various shapes of the face and figure is vital to becoming a good sculptor. Therefore open studio time or additional "table" class instruction is encouraged for artists to enhance their skill in learning form and articulation.
Hands

Any study of the great classical sculptors reveals a profound understanding of the shape, form and articulation of the hands and fingers. This degree of skill requires many hours of practice.
Legs and Feet

Anatomical Studies
In addition to understanding the structure of the skull for portraits, a study of the full anatomy of bone and muscle structure is of value.

Fees for Open Studio Time
The fee for open studio time is a flat $10 per hour. No instruction or live model is provided.
